ABSTRACT
Wood For manufacturing log idiophones, empirically known relative hardnesses of trees determine the selection of species. In the upright area, trunks are dressed to the shape of regular cylinders; through a slit, they are hollowed out, and their surfaces are ornamentally carved. In the horizontal area, makers retain natural irregularities to exploit any resulting variations in pitch; these instruments usually bear carved ornamentation only on their handles.
