ABSTRACT

The Republic of Kenya, independent since 1963, lies along the East African coast. It shares boundaries with Tanzania to the south, Uganda and Sudan to the west and northwest, and Ethiopia and Somalia to the north and northeast. Its land lies within the rift-valley region. Important lakes-Victoria to the west, Turkana to the northpartly define its boundaries. Its rift-valley areas and coastal regions receive abundant rainfall, but the rest of the country is dry. The coastal plains rise to the Nyika plateau, and then gradually to highlands. The peak of Mount Kenya stands more than 3,000 meters above sea level.
