ABSTRACT
After a succession of colonial occupations (Arab, German, British), Tanganyika achieved independence in 1961. Zanzibar, consisting of the islands of Zanzibar and Pemba, achieved independence from Great Britain in 1963. For several centuries, these states had had close cultural ties. In 1964, their political union established the United Republic of Tanzania.
