ABSTRACT

The Shona, a population of about 9 million Bantu-speakers, live mostly in Zimbabwe and partly in Mozambique. They speak five major dialects-Zezuru, Korekore, Manyika, Kalanga, Karanga. The source of the term Shona is unknown, but it has long referred to these groups, whose dialects follow a single orthography. The Shona people still recognize the areas of linguistic difference, which partly coincide with variation in traditional music.
