" T h a t is t h e n a t u r a l h a b i t a t o f t h e f a m o u s R o y a l Bengal tiger, am a g n i f i c e n t a n i m a l w i t h g r a c e , s p e e d , p o w e r , a n d s o m e ferocity. R e l a t i v e l y few o f t h e m a r e l e f t n o w , b u t t h e s u r v i v - i n g t i g e r s a r e p r o t e c t e d b y ah u n t i n g b a n . T h e S u n d a r b a n is a l s o fam o u s f o r t h e h o n e y i t p r o d u c e s i n l a r g e c l u s t e r s o f n a t u r a l b e e h i v e s . T h e p e o p l e w h o live i n t h e r e g i o n , d e s p e r a t e l y p o o r as t h e y a r e , g o i n t o t h e f o r e s t s t o c o l l e c t t h e honey, w h i c h f e t c h e s q u i t e ah a n d s o m e p r i c e i n t h e u r b a n m a r k e t s - m a y b e e v e n t h e r u p e e e q u i v a l e n t o f fifty U.S. c e n t s p e r b o t t l e . B u t t h e h o n e y c o l l e c t o r s a l s o h a v e t o e s c a p e t h e t i g e r s . I n ag o o d year, o n l y a b o u t fifty o r s o h o n e y g a t h e r - e r s a r e k i l l e d b y t i g e r s , b u t t h a t n u m b e r c a n be v e r y m u c h h i g h e r w h e n t h i n g s d o n ' t g o s o w e l l . W h i l e t h e t i g e r s a r e p r o t e c t e d , n o t h - i n g p r o t e c t s t h e m i s e r a b l e h u m a n b e i n g s w h o t r y t o m a k e aliving b y w o r k i n g i n t h o s e w o o d s , w h i c h a r e d e e p a n d l o v e l y - a n d q u i t e p e r i l o u s .
