ABSTRACT

The main task for the Bach Choir committee was to seek a candidate to fill the vacancy for Musical Director. Arnold Goldsborough, H. Foster Clark and Reginald Jacques, were short-listed and it was decided that each should be invited to conduct a private concert at the Royal College of Music before a final choice was made. Jacques had a somewhat inauspicious start to his public concert career with the choir. Jacques showed an increasingly sure touch, programming substantial modern works in Hoist's Hymn of Jesus, Delius's Songs of Farewell, Vaughan Williams's Sancta Civitas and Bax's The Morning Watch, together with items from the standard repertoire. Jacques completed arrangements for a full programme in the forthcoming season including the usual performances of carols and the St Matthew Passion, the Mass in B minor at the London Music Festival and a concert to raise funds for St George's Hospital.
