ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the position of court administrator from two perspectives: the nature of the position and the tasks to be accomplished; and the qualities and skills one should possess to perform effectively. Related to this latter perspective, the idea of court administrators as leaders and the need for leadership in courts also will be examined. The chapter discusses how to approach hiring a court administrator. The chapter explores the court administrator position as it wes a strong manager position. Some of the early court administration leaders had strong management backgrounds in either the public or private sector and sometimes MBA, law, or other advanced degrees when they were appointed as court administrator. In most respects, court administrators' duties and responsibilities are like those of other senior public administrators and senior executives in the private sector. There are internally focused and externally focused responsibilities.
