Providing balanced employee benefit plans that are competitive but fiscally responsible can be a challenge. The city’s employee benefit consulting firm and the employee benefit division financial staff planned to keep city and employee contribution levels to the health benefit fund in line with the previous year’s costs. Vacation days, sick days, and paid time of plans are another common feature of employee benefit programs. Medical coverage is generally provided through managed health care plans. Medical insurance covers the costs of physician and surgeon fees, hospital rooms, and prescription drugs. Disability insurance replaces all or part of the income that is lost when a worker is unable to perform his or her job because of illness or injury. Life insurance protects an employee’s family in the event of the employee’s death by providing money to pay for the family’s expenses.
