ABSTRACT

The web of economic ideas which was woven by the communitarian anarchists of the nineteenth century can be seen to constitute a tradition of economic thought. The communitarian anarchists of the nineteenth century did share some basic beliefs and prescriptions with respect to a future society. The tradition of their economic thought was internally consistent in its basic characteristics. The tradition of economic thought of the communitarian anarchists has intellectual and practical utility. It is a living tradition. The ethics which underpinned the economic ideas of the communitarian anarchists were fundamentally humanist and social in their character. A primary goal of communitarian anarchist economic thought was to determine how best to economize on, and respect, human labor. They had a profound belief in the inviolability and dignity of the individual such that no form of exploitation or coercion could be contemplated.
