ABSTRACT

For most educated people, there is nothing more certain, and therefore more acceptable, than scientific proof. The word 'educated' has been included simply because the notion of scientific truth is a relatively modern one, and there are still vast numbers of people in the world to whom it is an unfamiliar term. The kind of scientific proofs which are most familiar to us are those which concern simple established facts. Chemical proofs about the effects of alkalis and acids on other substances, for example litmus paper. Physical proofs relating to the laws of motion; the amount of energy required to overcome inertia, etc. Subjective proof is usually contrasted with objective proof, that is what we feel to be true as opposed to what can be shown to be really or objectively true. Ultimately, for many people, the belief and all that it implies is more important than the proof.
