ABSTRACT

THE badger, then, is an animal found in the country, the size of a fox, though not as tall, since its shin-bones are short. 1 2 It has more white than black fur, especially on the back and flanks. Its head is black in the centre, white at the sides. The hairs are stiff, the skin thick and strong, and the teeth sharp, so that it has a nasty bite. 2 Hence, when it is molested by dogs or other animals, it turns on to its back and defends itself with teeth and claws, 3 particularly against foxes, for these drive the badger out of its own dwelling with no other weapon than their stinking dung.
