ABSTRACT

ANTS, both winged and wingless, inhabit the northern countries in a multiplicity of species. 1 Winged ants, the larger variety, live in deserted parts in dwellings constructed from hair-like pine leaves and those of fir-trees, which are separated like the teeth of a comb, 2 by piling them into massively tall heaps. Bears will impulsively root about inside these with their noses, to stop them from itching, but then quickly withdraw from the ants’ nests in case they carry a number back to their own den, for they may breed so profusely that in time to come they could thrust the bears from their own caves. 3
