WHEN Erik the Eloquent, of whom more will be told below,1 had by various amazing stratagems managed to secure Alvild, the ravishingly beautiful daughter of Götar, the Norwegian king, as the promised wife of Frothi, king of the Danes, and had taken her to Denmark with everyone's acclaim, there occurred during the very nuptial feasting and dancing a hostile incursion of the Slavs upon the ruler and his kingdom.
