ABSTRACT

THE river Helgea, not far from the city of Kalmar in southern Gotaland, was under the jurisdiction of a certain Ulf, a Swede, who was also the nobly-born governor of that town. This Ulf was a man of shrewd and subtle intellect. Without hesitation he used the waters as a means of defence against the arrival of Danish ships in such a way that by their power he not only overwhelmed the enemy forces but broke them utterly.
