ABSTRACT

WHEN they see this danger from arrows that are falling from the heavens on to the heads of the soldiers in the fleet,1 the sailors screen their vessels with sails and cloths, using them to form the shape of tapering roofs. The sails are tied so that they hang very loosely indeed, for if they were fastened hard and taut there would be no limpness to save those on board from being badly hurt by a rigid missile, and they would suffer serious harm from arrows penetrating the screen.
