ABSTRACT

AGAIN the Britons, as Herodian informs us, resisted the Emperor Severus in the marshes, where they swam and waded quickly about, their naked bodies submerged as far as the groin with no regard for the mud, for they had never learnt to wear clothes. They fought there no less stoutly than in the open field, where they enclosed their stomach and neck in iron, considering this an embellishment and a proof of wealth, just as if it were gold.
