ABSTRACT

RELYING on successes of this kind, they have become so presumptuous that they are not deterred from approaching and harassing large ships, delayed in calm waters, by boring through their planks near the water-line; and to escape the arrows of the crew, who try to repel them from above, they are quick to row their craft vigorously away again. Yet for all their reckless assurance it is very seldom they achieve the upper hand, since they are frequently driven off by cannon, crossbows, and stones hurled at them.1
