ABSTRACT

SINCE the Finns, or the Finnish peoples of Scandinavia, are overfierce, it has been published by royal decree that, on pain of heavy penalties, they are not to employ at home weapons of war to destroy one another, in other words, lances, spears, javelins, swords, or long dag gers.1 They have, however, full leave to use axes and mattocks to lighten their requisite tasks in and about the house, and with these they produce marvellous buildings.2
