TO protect their bodies these Finns use either cuirasses of seal-skin steeped in lime or the hairy hide of elks.1 If they have to wage war in winter, they pour water over these and allow it to freeze thoroughly; the ice that then clings to the hairs on the outside does not melt when the wearer sweats, but keeps its original hardness.2
