ABSTRACT

FOR attacking and destroying strong citadels, castles, and towns the Göotar and Swedes also make use of certain devices, slanting screens stoutly built from beams of fir. These machines, which by vigorous pushing are easily and swiftly moved up over the ice, they set against the walls and, aided by this protection, ward off and render harmless every stone or piece of timber flung at them, whether these are launched straight at them or from above.
