IN the winter season, when every locality, passable and impassable, is fast bound by ice, the most strongly fortified cities and castles are hard pressed and closely besieged; otherwise, in the summer time, they seem unconquerable and unapproachable. For this reason the above picture shows how those who are liable to such straits and perils protect themselves.
