ABSTRACT

PLUTARCH states in his life of Lucius Lucullus that he was so carried away by the great victory he won over the barbarian Parthians that an ambition rose in him to subdue completely the other savage peoples who ventured to resist or object to his authority. But it was then the time of the autumn equinox and the hopes of all were cheated when bitterly cold weather1swiftly descended from the sky, everything was buried in snow and, if the air was ever still and clear, men's bodies were numbed by icy frost and cold.
