ABSTRACT
IT often happens on the shores of the Baltic Sea that hostile ships, equipped with pointed shears and grapnels together with other frightening means of defence and harmful implements, are long harassed by a persistent head-wind. Then, when a sudden frost comes upon them, they are squeezed very tightly in the vice-like grip of ice, as though pressed inside walls, and cannot tear themselves out.
