ABSTRACT

THERE is also another method of punishment used at all other periods of winter and ordained by our forefathers for the insolent and stub born. Holes are bored in the ice twenty to thirty feet apart from each other, and the men, tied under the arms with a rope, are pushed down through one hole under the ice and, by a second rope that has been stretched ahead, are drawn to the other opening. If this is done swiftly they thank their friends for dispatching their business with such haste and loyalty.
