ABSTRACT

AMONG the chief investigators who have written on the properties of Nature, and in particular those that concern mankind's healthier A J L sustenance, Hippocrates appears to have a superior theory and understanding of this barley drink, as is clearly shown in the books he com posed on the subject. This causes him to lay great stress upon the properties of barley and the drink manufactured from it (to which he attaches many different names), because it is healthier and more beneficial than any other corn or fruit in places where it is customary to use it for brewing excellent liquor.1
