ABSTRACT
THERE is much in learning and the arts which cannot properly be taught by rules, and indeed, even those ideas to which great men of high genius have attained by deep thought and daily discipline can hardly be expressed in one's own words. We must therefore have recourse to the profound work of the most exceptional painters, who can correctly express and securely reveal the mind's emotions with brush, light and shade, and a range of colours.
