SINCE there is nothing more difficult in human affairs than to understand by what judgments men's minds and inclinations are guided, or to discern clearly how one can control the emotions of those who are sunk in every kind of pleasure or misery, it is a custom among the more distinguished Göotar and Swedes, when they are about to give their daughters in honourable marriage, to test the suitors' temperaments for their outstanding characteristics and passions, especially by playing chess.1
