ABSTRACT
THERE was an ancient custom always observed among northern rulers and still practised in modern times with eager, unremitting enthusiasm. At public assemblies held by kings, princes, or noblemen, at wedding feasts or the investiture of eminent knights, before or after the celebration of triumphs in war, on the commemoration of royal birthdays, or for some other motive or pleasure, various kinds of jousting and tournaments are regularly held.1
