1IT adversity a stout courage is roused to seek a glorious death, and by standing fast will meet it, sooner than agree to any alternative and utterly degrading terms; for death pursues us from the rear, while we wisely defend our life facing frontward. Valour in war carries a significant stamp of honour and glory, inasmuch as it prefers death to slavery and disgrace.1
