SAXO, the outstanding Danish writer, recalls that the Danish King Sven had resolved to attack the inhabitants of Svealand and Gotaland.1 His perseverance in arms and his hatred were such that he would accept no terms of peace under which everyone should be allowed to live in safety, enjoying his life and liberty, even if their king were to issue a decree assenting to any treaties that might be offered.
