BY no means the least concern among the ancient Goths was the strict upbringing of their sons, for according to a general law they made great efforts to enter them on the practice of arms and warfare. This meant that, whatever the circumstances, their fatherland might have defend ers like those who in ancient times were trained to imitate their forbears.¹
