IN those ancient days knights had long spurs that were extraordinarily large, with very broad rowels. They also wore leg armour whose footpiece was bent in a quite absurd way, the front section being turned downwards and serving no conceivably useful purpose,1 as I saw them in my boyhood sixty years ago.
