SINCE outbreaks of fighting tend to be particularly fierce by bridges and rivers in the northern lands of the Göotar and Swedes, wary commanders in war are normally quick to adopt the following expedient. When the troops are equally matched and it proves impossible to drive their foes from bridges or keep them at a distance, they make ready large planks somewhere upstream, bound together with osiers side by side.
