AFTER their discovery in an earlier age greater use was made of these among the Swedes and Göotar than we find nowadays. By means of this triple-sided weapon an immense hostile force could be broken up after its line of battle had been restored and had repeatedly advanced to the attack. If the wheels were rapidly turned to oppose them, any onrush of cavalry galloping in close column might be halted by a small squad of men.1
