ABSTRACT

With the coming of peace in 1945, Medtner once more faced the uphill struggle in his professional career that had been the constant theme of his life. Though he felt he was playing better than ever, 1 he had not recovered all his former strength and knew that his heart condition set a question mark over his whole future as a concert artist. He was still composing – the Piano Quintet and another group of songs were in progress – but in the circumstances of post-war austerity publishing was problematic, so that piano lessons became even more important as a means of earning a living.
