ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the thematic relationship between Quincas Borba and the fashion section of A Estacao. Initially, Die Modenwelt was essentially a fashion periodical, with four richly illustrated pages. It examines the fashion section of the magazine, whose illustrations, captions and editorial were reproduced in the foreign editions, including A Estacao, after being translated. Moreover, as the majority of the readers, who were wives and daughters, were predominantly interested in family instruction, Die Modenwelt was also a periodical of principles, which gave particular emphasis to the moral values of the family. Information contained in Zum funfundzwanzigjahrigen Bestehen der Modenwelt makes it possible to conclude that Lipperheide based the staff responsible for composing the periodical, including its writers, translators and designers, in Berlin and Leipzig. In these two cities the woodcuts and lithographs which would illustrate both the fashion section and the entertainment page of Die Modenwelt were created.
