ABSTRACT

In any water body the current will always take the shortest route from inflow to outflow, so that pools that are wider than their length, or that have irregular shapes, will only have flow in the centre which may result in stagnant areas forming at the sides and in bays. One solution to this problem is to have several inlets and outlets; alternatively the pool can be designed to create turbulence and currents in the pool bed which will keep the water at the sides in motion. Remember that fish do like some quiet areas where they can rest and breed. Typical water flow speeds are given in Table 9.1.
