ABSTRACT

In the course of a turbulent, not entirely happy 18-month period spent mainly in Vienna, Szymanowski consolidated his reputation in German-speaking territories, first and foremost by way of a series of successful, mainly well-received performances of the Second Symphony and Second Piano Sonata. It was also at this stage of his career that he regularized his publishing affairs, signing a ten-year contract with Universal Edition, and composed the one-act opera Hagith.
