ABSTRACT

Wallis’s second musical paper in the Philosophical Transactions of 1698 concerned Renatus Harris, and may have arisen originally from his challenge to his fellow organ-builder ‘Father Smith’. 1 As Wallis recounts, Harris approached Pepys, who directed him to Wallis, and after some ‘little discourse’ with him Wallis wrote back to Pepys in a letter dated 27 June, which appeared in Philosophical Transactions 20/242 (July 1698): 249–56. 2
