ABSTRACT

Taverner probably composed Ave Dei Patris filia for Tattershall Collegiate Church, which was dedicated to the Trinity, but he may have continued to use it at Cardinal College with its similar dedication. It is easy to accept Baldwin's ascription of the opening section O splendor gloriae to Taverner. The text is anonymous, but the possibility that it was by Tye should be raised, since he is known to have written the words of one of his own compositions and may have composed some of the music of O splendor gloriae. virgo pura is scored for men: the lower two parts have the same compass and are identified as a gimel in the source; Prudens Virgo also avoids boys' voices. Either Baldwin selected only sections for men from the original composition, or this work never required boys' voices at all.
