ABSTRACT
The chapter explains that situation awareness includes virtually all of the elements involved in the operation of safe and efficient air transportation. Another and a continuing aircraft status situation awareness problem in advanced technology airplanes involves the mode of the automatic flight control system being used and the consequences of being in a particular mode at a particular time. Place information is of major importance in transport operation. The operating environment of the aviation infrastructure includes the facilities available, the existing traffic density, and the weather. In many areas, the quality of weather and traffic situation awareness varies with the relevant topical knowledge of the operators. Throughout the industry, there is general recognition that good situation awareness increases safety, reduces workload, enhances pilot performance, expands the range of pilot operations, and improves decision making. Economics and operational efficiency have made two-person crews the new standard for future airplanes.
