ABSTRACT

The beginning of 1857 found Ernst trying to regain his health in Brighton. Hector Berlioz wrote to him there at the end of January, regretting that he could not come over, outlining his progress on the Trojans, and reviewing plans for an English performance of the Childhood of Christ – he particularly dreaded the English manner of rehearsing. The review in the Musical World is one of the few occasions when a poor performance by Ernst is mentioned in the English press: Ernst rose from his sick bed to take part in the performance sooner than disappoint the subscribers. In the middle of February, the Musical World could report that Ernst's fragile state had done little to impede his normal concert schedule: This distinguished violinist is at present sojourning at Brighton, for the benefit of his health. He has, nonetheless, made several artistic visits to Manchester, Bradford, Sheffield, etc besides performing in several concerts in Brighton.
