Andersen's final years were plagued with illness, and his diaries reveal a series of dramatic fluctuations between hope for the future and utter despair. Thus, it is telling that in the work he presented as his final fairy tale, 'Tante Tandepine' (Auntie Toothache), he gives an account of a failed poet's sufferings and eventual slip into obscurity.
