ABSTRACT

Vinayakrao Patwardhan’s life is significantly more a matter of public record than Gurudev’s. Vinayak Narayan Patwardhan, to give him his full name, was born in Miraj on 22 July 1898. Both his parents succumbed to the plague in 1903. Vinayakrao did not stay long in Lahore, and left with Paluskar and Gurudev for Bombay in 1908 where he continued his studies. Vande Vinayakam tells people that Vinayakrao took full advantage of being back in the Miraj region to learn from and to hear other musicians. Vinayakrao returned to Bombay in 1917 to resume his studies with Paluskar in preparation for completing the Saṅgīt Pravīṇ, which he then passed in 1919. Also in 1917 he married the daughter (unnamed) of Balwantrao Joshi of Ichalkaranji, though the union was short-lived owing to his wife’s early death in 1920. Until 1942, the Pune branch of the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya had been allied to the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Maṇḍal.
