ABSTRACT

The chapter considers the role of rock and pop music in Portugal and of Portugal in the history of rock and pop. It explores the consequences of the Anglo-American popular music revolution for Portugal, for it cannot be denied that, like many other countries, Portugal responded to the call of the new music with its own versions of the templates. The chapter also considers the role of a few particular individuals who began their careers outside the world of fado but have had an important role in shaping the current configuration of the genre. A common theme in most descriptions of the novos fadistas is the fact of turning to fado singing after having considered, and even practised, other musical styles. The chapter emphasizes that fado, like any other popular music genre, has a place in the larger musical field and the borders of that place are far from impermeable, fixed or.
