ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on ethnomusicological uses of film and video in formal ethnomusicology education. It discusses the use of film and video in the university classroom. The chapter illustrates the experiences of one student who engaged in ethnomusicological film making. It explores with an assessment of the impact of ethnomusicological uses of film and video on students' attitudes and perspectives towards world music cultures. The chapter draws on the voices of ethnomusicologists and students from research conducted at four universities in 2008. It also explores the experiential portion of the ethnographic process during which ethnomusicologists study and seek to understand music in its cultural context. Editing may be compared to the analytical stages in ethnographic writing, which aims to reduce collected data to a more manageable form so as to tell a story about the people studied.
