ABSTRACT
The Railway System of Tanganyika Territory consists of a metre gauge railway from Dar-es-Salaam to Kigoma on Lake Tanganyika with a branch from Tabora to Mwanza on Victoria Nyanza, and of another metre gauge railway in the North of the Territory from Tanga to Arusha. The Engineering Department of the Tanganyika Railways is in charge both of maintenance and of new construction, survey and capital works. The organisation of the Locomotive Department has been dictated by the fact that it possesses three separate workshops at Dar-es-Salaam, Tabora and Tanga. The German Administration had intended to establish the main workshops of the Central Railway at Tabora and abolish gradually those which already existed at Dar-es-Salaam. The Traffic Department is organised in three districts, two on the Central line with headquarters at Dar-es-Salaam and Tabora respectively and one on the Tanga line.
