ABSTRACT

This chapter explores distinctive gestural traditions through the exemplars of four individual directors, as presented on the accompanying DVD. The different styles of body language are shared not only between barbershop directors, but also with quartet singers. The first clip on the DVD shows Adrian Lucas rehearsing the boys in his own arrangement of the Coventry Carol. Lucas's technique is clearly based on traditional conducting patterns. Worcester Cathedral Choir is a traditional men and boys' choir, consisting of boy trebles and adult men singing alto, tenor and bass. The City of Birmingham Symphony Chorus was founded in 1974, and describes itself as a 'body of unpaid professionals'. Sally McLean has been directing the White Rosettes since 1998, having previously been singing with them since 1982. The Birmingham Community Gospel Choir was formed in 2005 to promote gospel music in Birmingham, and to act as a training ground for members of other local choirs.
