ABSTRACT
In this chapter, the most interesting results of this study are presented. Based on the sociocultural issues discussed early in this book, it was predictable that the Lemon Grove Chicanos, concerned with truth and honesty, would use epistemic modals for their evidential function only—to express doubt and certainty. The data presented in chapter 5 showed that they did just that, similar to the uses demonstrated by the Anglo participants.
