Charles Hallé remains something of a mystery when we try to construct a picture of him as a person. The sheer variety of his gifts and spheres of activity is a challenge. Glimpses of his manner on the platform and the flavour of his music making come from reports such as those already quoted, and his style as a businessman emerges from his letters to colleagues such as James Forsyth. 1 the latter reveal an extraordinarily detailed control of every aspect of his enterprise, coupled with a warm humanity and concern for family, friends and colleagues.
